Schumann’s Rhine-inspired Third
Symphony was written shortly
before the composer began a
shocking descent into
insanity. Brahms was there to care
for Schumann in his last days, and
when he came to write his own Third
Symphony Brahms filled it with the
Rhenish charm of Schumann’s: its
impulsive musical flow,
relentless melodic invention and
deep luminous orchestration – a
touching homage to the Schumann
Brahms knew and adored.
