Fun, if not quite fizzy: Liam Steel’s Opera Holland Park Fledermaus

Von Eleanor Knight, 29. Juli 2026

It's New Year’s Eve 1929-style, but the Champagne is a touch warm in OHP's first production of Strauss’ most popular operetta, Die Fledermaus.

Nightmares dressed as daydreams: Respighi and Ravel at the Royal College of Music

Von Dominic Lowe, 13. März 2023

An opportunity to hear one of Respighi's operas in the UK is a real treat; the composer's take on Sleeping Beauty, La bella dormente nel bosco, is an ideal companion to to Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges in a terrific double bill at the Royal College of Music.

Fresh, funny, frivolous: Gilbert & Sullivan's Patience from English Touring Opera in Cambridge

Von Charlotte Valori, 26. April 2017

A joyous explosion of tuneful Victorian satire provides an unlikely, yet ideal, contrast to English Touring Opera's Tosca as their Patience tours the UK in this finely-cast, period-perfect production.

In Salzburg, how do you solve a problem like two Marias? West Side Story at the Whitsun Festival

Von Jonathan Sutherland, 13. Mai 2016

A case of “seeing double” in Salzburg, as Cecilia Bartoli brings West Side Story to her Whitsun Festival.

A very wicked village: Britten's Albert Herring at the Royal College of Music

Von Charlotte Valori, 2. Juli 2015

The laughs keep on coming in Liam Steel's glorious 1950s Albert Herring in an English village where pretensions rise as morals decay, while Nick Pritchard shines as our modest eponymous hero.

Fun-filled Magic Flute from ETO in Hackney

Von Ken Ward, 7. März 2014

English Touring Opera's production of Mozart's The Magic Flute launches in Hackney, balanced more towards fun than profundity, with some stunning coups de théâtre.

Lumberjacks and pioneers: Britten's Paul Bunyan from English Touring Opera

Von Aksel Tollåli, 17. Februar 2014

Paul Bunyan is something of an oddity in Benjamin Britten’s oeuvre; a satirical operetta (with a libretto by W.H. Auden) about pioneers in America who are led by a gigantic lumberjack.

Orpheus in the Underworld - the antidote to highbrow opera

Von David Karlin, 4. Dezember 2010

If anyone tells you that all opera is highbrow, Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld provides you with a perfect example of the opposite. It's coarse, raunchy, fast, fun, and continually pokes fun at the conventions of grand opera.
