Werther is a poignant opera based on Goethe’s 1774 novel, portraying the tragic passion of a young man consumed by unrequited love. Set in the 1950s, Christof Loy’s production, originating from La Scala and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, delves into the psychological depth of the characters. The stage is dominated by a large horizontal wall, symbolising the divide between Werther’s yearning and Charlotte’s constrained affection. The opera features a delicate orchestral backdrop, with Henrik Nánási conducting the Orchestra of The Liceu Opera House. Xabier Anduaga and Matthew Polenzani alternate in the role of Werther, while Charlotte is portrayed by Isabel Leonard and Elina Garanča. This production offers an intimate exploration of love, longing, and societal constraints.
