Die Inszenierung überzeugt in einer Kombination von klassischer Ausstattung und moderner Focussierung auf die Psychologie der Figuren. Die musikalische Umsetzung ist exzellent. Tschaikowskis Oper wird zu einem packenden Seelendrama von Figuren, die in überkommenen Mustern verstrickt sind.
