As part of the LPO’s 2020 Vision series of concerts, a hotchpotch of works were gathered together to produce a rather mixed bag of an evening. 

Howard Griffiths conducts a rich, glowing performance of Schumann's Fourth Symphony in the second half of a heart-warming concert.

A superb concert from the London Philharmonic Orchestra under an inspirational Vasily Petrenko who brought vivid colours to two ballet scores straddling the Great War, and an excusite rendtion of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. 

Sergej Krylov makes a superb case for Andzej Panufnik's Violin Concerto; Søndergard and the LPO disappoint in Sibelius but thrill with Shostakovich's Symphony no. 5.

In a program inspired by Italy, Roberto Abbado and Sergej Krylov join the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in powerhouse performances that featured some dazzling solo violin playing. 

It is pleasing to see concerts of music by living composers well attended, and such was the case at “A Timeless Beauty”, part of the Southbank Centre’s year-long celebration of contemporary music The Rest is Noise. This concert’s theme was “Politics and Spirituality”, and looked to the former Soviet Union for inspiration.Two composers on the programme provided contrasting examples.
