When the director walks four weeks ahead of opening night, Dutch National Opera and Ballet hastily create a searing double bill of classical tragedy. 

Claus Guth’s Don Giovanni returns to Amsterdam with an almost entirely new cast with strong leads by Seth Carico and Adrian Sâmpetrean. 

Jean-Paul Scarpitta’s San Carlo staging was almost as minimal as a biblical oratorio.

Verdi voices that make one sit up and listen made this a memorable matinee.

Damiano Michieletto’s intriguing production of Rigoletto is set in a mental hospital, and sidelines emotion in favour of analysis. The singing, on the other hand, is heartfelt and exciting.

Better conducting and supertitles would also help breathe life into this drab revival of Bayerische Staatsoper's Don Carlo.

Strong playing and singing aren't enough to make the Bayerische Staatsoper's Rigoletto a compelling evening out.
