Cédric Tiberghien and Carlos Kalmar dispel the gloom with performances to delight the ear. 

An evening of French music in Tokyo, the highlight of which was a rare performance of Albéric Magnard's Fourth Symphony. 

Cedric Tiberghien brought Prokofiev's surreal Visions Fugitives and Mussorgsky's monumental Pictures at an Exhibition to life in a concert rich in musical colour, expression and vivid imagination.

A programme based around aquatic themes visited the choppy waters of Scandinavia and the calmer tides of the Mediterranean before plumbing the shallows of an unfathomable recent work.  

Prom 29 had a distinctly French flavour, with themes of dance and birdsong running through the programme in a glittering performance of music by Mozart, Ravel, Messiaen and Stravinsky.

Daniil Trifonov dazzled, for sure, but at times he did slightly more than that. And when he did dazzle, it was always very musical dazzling; he is far from the empty dazzler one might expect so young a virtuoso to be. No – there’s no doubt that Trifonov is a highly intelligent musician, as well as a highly talented one, and there was much to enjoy in this varied programme for Wigmore Hall.

Chinese pianist Di Xiao is already making a name for herself with sell-out concerts in many of Europe’s most prestigious venues and a triumphant tour of China, as well as two recordings. Her debut recital at London’s Wigmore Hall was a programme conjuring up images of moonlight while “illuminating other byways along the way”.Di Xiao opened with Beethoven’s Sonata Opus 27 No.
