The CBSO’s matinee, conducted by Fabien Gabel, juxtaposes cheerful Mozart and an unpredictable new concerto from Mark Simpson with a polarised account of Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony.

The Northern Chamber Orchestra made a strong case for Haydn's Symphony No 21 and Ben Hudson gave a fine performance of Mozart's Bassoon Concerto in a historic Cheshire venue.

Perhaps the best jokers keep the straightest faces. For much of this evening at Wigmore Hall, the body language of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra portrayed serious musicians going about their serious business. 

Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts occupies the site where once stood the Pensionnat Héger, the school where Charlotte and Emily Brontë lived during their sojourn in the Belgian capital – an appropriate setting, as it is not difficult to imagine Bruckner’s mighty Fourth Symphony underscoring one of the sisters’ Gothic tales of unrequited love.
