A concert of two halves: the Philharmonia and Dame Mitsuko Uchida light up Beethoven with the essence of Classical style, but the orchestra struggles in Sibelius’ Lemminkäinen Suite. 

In a concert consisting of two contrasting works, the BBC Philharmonic and John Storgårds gave a dramatic performance of Sibelius' Lemminkäinen Suite and Garrick Ohlsson offered a restrained but virtuosic account of Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto.

Daniele Rustioni also conducts the Hallé in a gripping account of Sibelius'  atmospheric Lemminkäinen Suite.

In an unusual programme, with Finnish music from Rautavaara and Sibelius, separated by Walton, the Ulster Orchestra and Anu Tali find all the subtleties in the music.  

Sakari Oramo conducts the European première of a fine new work alongside familiar Grieg and Sibelius.

The celebrations 100 years of Finnish Independence move to the Royal Festival Hall, with an all-Sibelius programme and Esa-Pekka Salonen: the highlight is soloist Vilde Frang's playing of the Violin Concerto.

Put Sakari Oramo in front of the BBCSO and invariably something magical happens. This concert included rare repertoire from two of Oramo's favourite Scandinavian composers.

A great evening of Sibelius – shape, architecture and detail from Osmo Vänskä, excellent ensemble and solo work from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and an impassioned performance of the Violin Concerto from Alexandra Soumm.

The latest Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert, entitled Legends by the Sea, was an intriguing mix of contrasting works by Sibelius, Fauré and Debussy.Sibelius’ Lemminkäinen suite was an entirely new discovery for me. If Ashkenazy himself describes it as containing “some of Sibelius’ best music”, it is definitely a discovery worth making.
