Franz Welser-MöstDirección musical, Dirección

The most iconic four notes in music kick off this performance by Franz Welser-Möst and “America’s finest” (The New York Times) orchestra. Beethoven’s immortal Fifth Symphony is practically synonymous with its “fate knocking at the door” motif, but musical riches unfold from start to finish. An optimistic, three-note motif from its triumphant final movement is reborn in the Leonore Overture No. 3, written for Beethoven’s sole opera, Fidelio. Welser-Möst calls Fidelio “much more an idea than an opera,” and in Leonore No. 3, “the idea of freedom—not just politically, but in a big philosophical way for every individual—is put into 13 minutes of music.” Powerful thematic contrast comes in the form of a rarely performed suite of Janáček’s final opera, From the House of the Dead.
