Manon Lescaut is a passionate opera that explores the tragic love between a young student and a beautiful woman torn between love and luxury. Premiered in 1893, it marked Puccini’s first major success and began his fruitful collaboration with librettists Illica and Giacosa. The opera features rich melodies, including the famous “Sola, perduta, abbandonata,” showcasing Puccini’s lyrical prowess.

Directed by Àlex Ollé, this production from the Frankfurt Opera updates the story to a contemporary setting, depicting Manon and her brother as immigrants facing exploitation. Set designs by Alfons Flores and costumes by Lluc Castells create a gritty, urban atmosphere, while the recurring motif of the word “LOVE” underscores the opera’s themes of desire and despair.

Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian stars as Manon, delivering a compelling performance alongside American tenor Joshua Guerrero as Des Grieux. Conducted by Josep Pons, this production offers a modern, emotionally charged interpretation of Puccini’s masterpiece.
