Mistrust, rage and colonialism: Otello at the Staatsoper

Aleksandrs Antonenko (Otello) © Wiener Staatsoper GmbH | Michael Pöhn
During the “Salce” and “Ave Maria” in Act Four Bezsmertna turned this to magical effect, thinning out and floating her shimmering soprano into gossamer threads.

The Pearl Fishers: a lackluster evening at The Met

Pretty Yende (Leïla) and Javier Camarena (Nadir) © Marty Sohl | Metropolitan Opera
The second performance of the Met's Pearl Fishers saw one of the leads withdraw mid-performance again. A welcome performance by young baritone Alexander Birch Elliott could not rescue the evening.

BRB: Aladdin

Tzu-Chao Chou as the Djinn of the Lamp with Artists of Birmingham Royal Ballet © Bill Cooper
All the creative contributions of direction, choeography, designs and music come together to achieve a stirring ballet that tells a familar story with great clarity

Fishing for pearls in Los Angeles

Nino Machaidze (Leïla) © Ken Howard
The casting was something special. Each of the principals was fun to watch, magnificent to listen to, believable in every gesture, look and touch.
