Ballet Nights 008 – Spring into Summer proved to be a judicious choice of quality and diverse repertoire. 

A well-curated gala with gravitas; showcasing several works and dancers rarely, if ever, seen in London.

When de Luz reached down and laid his hand on the floor in the final Nocturne, it suggested to me that, on this night and with these dancers, the stage was sacred ground.

Sterling Hyltin owns The Concert and seems to be having the best time of anybody onstage.

Balanchine’s Jewels program is one of those can’t miss nights at New York City Ballet.

The double bill of Liebeslieder Walzer and Tschaikovsky Suite No. 3 is a cloying juxtaposition that serves neither well at New York City Ballet. A handful of fascinating performances rescue the evening. 

A flock of women triumphed on opening night of Peter Martins' patchy Swan Lake at New York City Ballet: the peerless Sara Mearns as Odette-Odile; Ana Sophia Scheller, Tiler Peck and Megan Fairchild in a spectacular pas de quatre; and corps dancers Jacqueline Bologna, Baily Jones, Alexa Maxwell and Claire Von Enck as the Four Little Swans. 

This summer marks 25 years of excellence by Ardani artists. A gala celebrating this milestone brings together Natalia Osipova, Ivan Vasiliev, Edward Watson, Marcelo Gomes, Joaquin de Luz, Denis Matvienko and Friedemann Vogel.

Change is in the air at Ballet San Jose, and Saturday night’s star-studded gala to welcome new artistic director José Manuel Carreño proved this in a big way.

From lifelong fans to the previously uninitiated, New York City Ballet’s All Robbins program was designed to make the whole house cheer. Jerome Robbins’ (1918–98) work on Broadway and in ballet made him a revered artist in both circles. Few others were ever able to achieve such crossover success.

This season New York City Ballet unveiled two entirely new ballets by choreographers Peter Martins and Benjamin Millepied. Both world premieres took place during the NYCB’s spring gala earlier this month and were reprised Tuesday night for an eager, if not as impressively dressed, audience.Martins’ Mes oiseaux (“My Birds”), first of the night, included some interesting choices.

In the mid-1960s, a visit to renowned French jewelers Van Cleef and Arpels inspired George Balanchine to choreograph a glittering ballet. New York City Ballet premiered Jewels in April of 1967 at the New York State Theater (now called the David H. Koch Theater) and it remains a fan favorite 44 years later, delighting audiences from that same stage.
