A sublime Robbins-Balanchine pairing at New York City Ballet, it was Robbins’ Goldberg Variations that came off best.

NYCB's triple bill that harks back to the 1950s proves a love letter to an America that never was.

Balanchine's much-loved yet maddeningly disjointed A Midsummer Night's Dream returns to New York City Ballet. Some glorious performances on opening night, some uneven. But the night belonged to the bugs.

When We Fell, Kyle Abraham’s bracing new piece for NYCB, made a minimalist statement on a maximalist quadruple bill, also notable for stunning ensemble work in Alexei Ratmansky's Odesa.

A winning mixed bill at New York City Ballet, featuring three stylistically and conceptually very different works, yielded many gems. 

The whole evening had an excellence across four ballets that is a rare occasion. And it had a sui generis portrayal in Alexa Maxwell’s Novice. I would highly recommend seeing this program.

New York City Ballet marked its 75th anniversary with the same triple bill that caused so much excitement at City Center in 1948: Orpheus, Concerto Barocco and Symphony in C.

Namouna does go on too long and not every joke lands, but it’s a fun ballet and the company clearly relishes dancing it. 

Recent retirements within NYCB have resulted in uneven performances, but there is still hope for future spring programs.

If the famous fairy variations in the Prologue can sometimes expose weaknesses, NYCB proved that it excels in pure classical ballet and not only in the neo-classical repertory.

Concerto DSCH received a raucous reception during curtain calls. It’s a classic closer for an evening in that it sends everyone home happy. It doesn’t below as the middle ballet. Programming gods at NYCB, are you listening?

The NYCB dancers are very at-home in this idiom, and they threw themselves wholeheartedly into this ballet. It was never less than watchable, but the music cried out for more avante-garde choreography than Peck provided.

A matinee performance that was bright and polished across the board, boding well for the company's future. 

NYCB has always had a mission to present new works and Saturday's program included Amaria, a creation by Mauro Bigonzetti for retiring ballerina Maria Kowroski.

Sofia Coppola's film closed on a note of optimism. The message seemed to be: “Normality is just around the corner. We’re coming back.” 

An all-Balanchine program that is remarkably energetic and free at New York City Ballet

Twelve years after its creation, we’re still talking about what’s going on in Russian Seasons and we’re still looking forward to what the next dancer in gold, or red, or green will do with the role.

Balanchine’s Jewels program is one of those can’t miss nights at New York City Ballet.
