After nearly axing the ensemble last year, the BBC celebrates 100 years of the BBC Singers with a rapturously received programme. 

For their 2019 season-opener, Tognetti and the ACO collaborate with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir to give a meditative, quasi-religious program centred on Bach and Pärt.

Bach, Biber, St. John's Smith Square. Clever juxtapositions, and they worked. The programmer of this concert - by the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Solists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner - had a neat thought, to place Bach's six Motets (BWV 225-230) into the former church in SW1. The building and the motets date from the same decade, the 1720's.

Une soirée avec le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu à Saint Bonaventure de Lyon, c’est un véritable tableau vivant de la musique baroque. N’imaginerait-on pas ainsi l’Avent en Saxe, dans un sanctuaire médiéval, le maître de Leipzig à son clavecin, dirigeant une maîtrise dans l’une de ses cantates ?

Un concert émouvant que se conclude dans une rare allégresse, teintée de spiritualité et d’intensité.
