There was a tingle to this concert, as if musicians and audience alike saw clearly for the first time what riches lie ahead.

Fingers and bows fluttered through dance-like figures and virtuosic passages packed with trills with astonishing clarity and brilliance.

Britten's Spring Symphony and Ryan Wigglesworth's Locke's Theatre join with Rudolf Buchbinder's thrilling account of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody, all conducted, at short notice, by Brett Mitchell, Franz Welser-Möst's assistant.

The sea has been the inspiration for many concert works; Debussy’s La mer springs to mind immediately as perhaps the most popular, but in England during the first half of the 20th century nautical themes sustained an important presence. Amongst Delius’ Sea Drift, Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes sits Frank Bridge’s short and splendid suite The Sea.

This was a recreation of a Proms concert that Benjamin Britten conducted in 1963, but with a contemporary twist.
