Tchaikovsky juggles beauty and suffering in his searing ‘Pathétique’ Symphony and Munich cellist Daniel Müller-Schott steps into the solo spot for Elgar’s elegiac concerto.
Reminicent, ruminating and spiralling: Elgar’s Cello Concerto is unlike his early works and yet remains one of his most popular. The cello’s humble voice pushes its way through the orchestra in a soliloquy to a lost way of life.
The concert ends with Tchaikovsky’s journey to the depths of the soul. Despite ending on a note of utter despair, the ‘Pathétique’ is among the composer’s most beautiful works.
Opus Klassik award winner and Munich cellist, Daniel Müller-Schott alongside Sir Antonio Pappano, whose first season as Chief Conductor of the LSO also began with Elgar, promises an evening of emotional brilliance. The LSO continues the powerful intensity of the evening with ‘Pathétique’, the evening’s symphonic climax.
