Since 2017, the stage of the Teatro de la Maestranza has not relived the setbacks of the bohemians who, with the music of Puccini, shared a garret and projects in a Paris out of step with time. The story of Rodolfo, Mimi, Marcello and friends is the sad truth about short lived youth, how reality feeds on dreams and false perceptions, obliging one to mature too quickly in an overly cold world.
La bohème designed by Jonathan Miller for the English National Opera (revived here by Isabella Bywater) takes the action to the 30´s of the last century, respecting the original action while putting the focus on each character of this group tragedy. It is tainted by verismo, but with the most Italian “canto” and the very beautiful melodies for its protagonists.
Leading the cast on this occasion are two of the grand voices on the international scene: tenor Celso Albelo and soprano Ailyn Pérez, acclaimed interpreters of Puccini in two of their favourite roles. It will be the first time they perform together on the stage of our theatre. The anticipated return home after nearly 10 years of the poet, the seamstress and the rest of the bohemians will be quite the event.
