| Julia Fischer | Violon |
| Yulianna Avdeeva | Piano |
Violinist Julia Fischer has been internationally celebrated for decades as both a soloist and chamber musician. Here she joins her regular piano partner Yulianna Avdeeva in music built around the interplay of two equal voices.
Handel offers poise and clarity, while Respighi’s B minor Sonata inhabits a far more opulent world. Written in 1917, its sweeping melodies and rich harmonies build towards a powerful final Passacaglia, where an ancient musical form is transformed with passionate 20th-century intensity.
Beethoven pushes the partnership between violin and piano still further. He describes the Kreutzer Sonata as written almost like a concerto – and its scale and ambition are unlike anything that precedes it. From its arresting opening for violin alone, the music is charged with contrasts: intimacy and grandeur, lyricism and explosive energy.
Across three centuries, the violin sonata grows from elegant conversation into musical drama on an almost symphonic scale.
