Kumpania

"Zarzuela sin palabras" offers a unique approach to rediscovering the zarzuela genre through a purely instrumental performance. In this recital the quartet Kumpania — Manu Brazo on saxophone, Pepe Fernández on piano, Rosa García Varela on cello and Claudia Gallardo on violin — explores the classic Spanish zarzuela repertoire without voices, letting the melodic lines and harmonic richness of each piece shine on their own. In this format the instruments take on the roles of characters and choruses, evoking the themes of love, joy and tragedy so characteristic of the genre. Formed by four Andalusian musicians, the quartet is a blend of virtuosity, variety and excellence. Manu Brazo, an innovative saxophonist and ambassador for Selmer Paris and BAM, has performed in prestigious halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie, the Royal Albert Hall and CSO Ada in Ankara (Turkey's presidential auditorium), and was the first Spaniard to win a prize at the Prince of Wales competition in England. Pepe Fernández, a versatile pianist from Utrera and a teacher at the "Manuel Castillo" Conservatory of Music in Seville, released his first album "Folk-Lore" with Manu Brazo, has worked as répétiteur in contemporary operas such as Manuel Busto's "La Mujer Tigre" and shared the stage with leading flamenco artists such as Perrate. Rosa García Varela, a cellist with experience in the EUYO and as principal cello of the Orchestre National des Jeunes du Luxembourg, has performed with orchestras such as the Málaga Philharmonic, the Granada City Orchestra and the Almería City Orchestra, under conductors including Vasily Petrenko, Stéphane Denève and Pablo Heras-Casado. Claudia Gallardo, a violinist trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a member of the Bruma Quartet, has performed at the Latin Grammy Awards as part of the Orquesta Bética de Cámara (resident orchestra at the Person of the Year gala) and at international festivals such as the Perth Festival of the Arts and the Newbury Spring Festival with the Revive trio.
