Four Scarlatti sonatas open Debargue’s striking performance – miniature worlds in which melody, rhythm and keyboard colour are continually reshaped.

Beethoven’s atmospheric Moonlight Sonata is understandably one of the composer’s most widely cherished works. Its famous opening movement may be steeped in nocturnal stillness, but the music grows increasingly restless before erupting into its turbulent finale.

After the interval, Liszt’s Second Ballade unfolds on a much broader canvas. Dark, surging music gives way to moments of lyricism and eventually transformation. Its powerful sense of narrative has even prompted associations with Greek myths and legends.

Finally, Debargue becomes composer as well as performer. His exuberant 20 Concert Variations & Finale take ‘Summertime’, the much-loved song from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, as the starting point for a journey through changing moods and sometimes unexpected styles – from tango to polonaise, bossa nova to reggae.

A performer of fierce integrity and dazzling communicative power, Debargue draws inspiration for his playing from literature, painting, jazz and cinema and develops a very personal interpretation of a carefully selected repertoire.
