Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante for violin, viola and orchestra is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of its kind. The music sparkles with brilliance, youthful energy and mature depth. It is also Mozart’s tribute to the viola’s darkly coloured timbre, here set in dialogue with the violin’s radiance.

We hear violinist Janine Jansen together with the British violist Timothy Ridout and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft. For Konserthuset audiences, Janine Jansen is an ever-popular and much sought-after soloist. This season, she returns on several occasions: in two programmes with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and in a recital of Beethoven’s violin sonatas in the Main Hall.

Composer-in-Residence Djuro Zivkovic draws his deepest inspiration from Eastern Orthodox mysticism and the Byzantine chant tradition. His music often unfolds slowly, yet with great intensity. For this concert, he has written a brand-new work for orchestra.

The concert concludes with Leoš Janáček’s rhapsody Taras Bulba, inspired by Gogol’s tale of the Cossack leader and his sons – richly textured music filled with passion and power.
