Opera North brings its fresh approach, characteristic passion and technical brilliance to one of the most significant works in Western music history.

After Tristan und Isolde, music could never be the same again. First performed in 1865, this groundbreaking opera still has the power to shock.

Based on a medieval story that shares star-crossed themes with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, it describes a love so intense that it transcends death, set to some of the most sensuous music ever composed. So extreme is the work that Wagner himself called it ‘frightful’.

With scene projections, costumed soloists and orchestra centre-stage, and conducted by Antony Hermus, Opera North’s new production by Peter Mumford is sure to be as much the ‘concentrated and riveting realisation’ (The Guardian) as his much-praised Ring Cycle.

Founded in 1978, Opera North receives widespread critical acclaim for its ambitious productions, exceptional orchestral performances and innovative stagings.

As one of the greatest operas ever written meets the company’s bold storytelling style, the result is bound to have you pinned to your seat.
