Based on the well-known fairy tale of Cinderella, this is a heartwarming comic opera for all ages. Director Lysanne van Overbeek shows that Cinderella doesn’t just wait to be rescued; she takes her fate into her own hands.
Poor Cinderella has to scrub and clean all day long, while her two snobbish stepsisters do nothing. When a ragged beggar comes to the door one day, Cinderella shows her kind heart by giving him food. And lo and behold, that vagabond turns out to be Prince Ramiro’s disguised advisor…
This opera masterfully combines comic scenes with touching and magical moments, and Rossini’s music is exuberant and accessible. Although the story doesn’t quite match Grimm’s fairy tale or the Disney film, the opera has a wonderfully romantic happy ending.
