John Dowland and Henry Purcell: into the heart of English melancholy
Lea Desandre’s voice flourishes in all repertoires. Before she performs the martyr Theodora in Handel’s oratorio, then pays tribute to Julie Andrews in a concert dedicated to the most memorable tunes from her musicals, she will open her residency in Brussels this season embodying not a role, but an emotion, a state of mind.
The French singer offers an intimate insight into seventeenth-century English music, a period when melancholy was seen as a sign of a superior, mature mind, inhabited by deep emotions. In this recital, Dowland’s delicate Lute Songs, such as ‘Come Again’ and ‘Go Crystal Tears’, blend harmoniously with Purcell’s moving arias, including ‘When I Am Laid in Earth’ from Dido and Aeneas. With Ensemble Jupiter, led by lutenist Thomas Dunford, Lea Desandre breathes new life into this timeless repertoire, confirming the brilliance of an international career that continues to blossom.
