The oboe, the English horn and the bassoon were usually confined to the orchestra, where they played a crucial role. They would occasionally perform as soloists. They were rarely encountered in the Parisian salons. However, in 1795, the Paris Conservatoire had begun training musicians to play these instruments, which inspired Romantic composers to explore their potential. Competition pieces and chamber compositions showcased this new virtuosity. Known for her Oboe Concerto (Op. 7), Clémence de Grandval wrote extensively for double-reed instruments. Most of her works were written for the oboist Georges Gillet, who was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire from 1881 to 1919.
