Beethoven didn’t play by the rule book, and took a proper radical approach to the piano concerto that changed the game. Earlier composers treated them as a polite chat between piano and orchestra – dead refined. But Beethoven? No, his concertos were more like a dramatic scrap between the two. His first concerto balances class with drama, while the third’s got a gut-wrenching middle section, before it finishes in a high speed musical chase.
