And so our journey through the string quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven begins. Already in the moving, tragic slow movement of the early D major quartet you feel the pain in Beethoven’s life. By the time of his Opus 130, he had accepted such pain as inevitable, and in this piece’s famous ‘Cavatina’ it dissolves away in music of rare beauty and resignation.
