Our Chamber concert series at Hallé St Peter’s is a unique opportunity to get up close to the music and enjoy smaller groups of musicians performing incredible music in a more intimate setting.
Written for the unusual instrumental combination of trumpet, two violins, viola, cello, double bass and piano, Saint-Saëns’ Septet in E flat, Op.65 reflects the composer’s interest in the French musical traditions of the 17th century. From its opening flourish of unison scales to its lively dance finale, this neglected masterpiece is packed with musical humour.
The concert also includes the world premiere of John Casken’s Enchant for trumpet and piano, written for, and performed here by, Tom Osborne, the Hallé’s Co-Principal Trumpet. The piece is part of Casken’s ongoing exploration of expressive, colourful chamber music.
