Pianist, organist, composer and musicologist, the Canadian artist of Estonian descent Kara-Lis Coverdale is deeply rooted in contemporary musical practice while drawing on the rich tradition of Baltic choral music, placing the voice at the centre of her artistic research. At Biennale Musica she will perform music from her latest album, Changes in Air, in which electronics, acoustic instruments and organ intertwine in a composition of remarkable timbral refinement. On stage she will be joined by acclaimed organist Sarah Davachi, recipient of the Silver Lion of Biennale Musica.
A pioneer of the Japanese noise scene and a cult figure in radical improvisation, Keiji Haino, recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of Biennale Musica, will present a concert for voice and string instruments. Deliberately resisting stylistic categorisation, his work traverses a wide range of musical territories—from noise, free jazz and blues to rock, electroacoustic experimentation, folk and drone—creating a singular and inimitable musical language that continually redefines the boundaries between art music and underground practices.
