Please note there will be no interval during this performance.Fatally ill, Anton Bruckner grappled unsuccessfully with the completion of his Ninth Symphony. But he consoled himself with his achievements in another great masterpiece: Bruckner declared that on entering heaven, ‘I will present to the Lord the score of my Te Deum, and he will judge me mercifully.’ This awe-inspiring hymn of praise combines touching tenderness with blazing triumph, a musical capturing of Bruckner’s rock-steady faith. It seems the only viable epilogue not only to Bruckner’s life but also to the three completed movements of his Ninth Symphony, themselves revealing a blazing spiritual optimism in the face of mortality.
