Music from the ashes: exiled from his native Hungary and terminally ill, Béla Bartók responded with a mighty shout of joy. Richard Strauss looked at a world in ruins, and thought of Beethoven. From the darkest days of the Second World War, two extraordinary orchestral masterpieces prove that life, hope – and music – will find a way. Thomas Søndergård plumbs the depths and scales the heights; Beethoven’s brilliant call to freedom leads the way.
