A concert of key works by Schubert, Britten and Shostakovich.

The two completed movements of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony ushered in the Romantic style, which can be heard resonating in Britten's hauntingly beautiful song cycle.

Shostakovich had effectively been backed into a corner by Stalin's cultural watchdogs when he produced his all-conquering Fifth Symphony as an 'artist's response to just criticism'.

Composed for Peter Pears and Dennis Brain, Britten's Sereande for Tenor, Horn and Strings presents fearsome challenges for performers. Mark Padmore and Katy Woolley met those challenges superbly.
