The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra visits the Proms in the first of two concerts with its current Music Director. Tonight they are joined by a charismatic Proms favourite who made her debut here in 2001, playing the same concerto. Before revisiting Beethoven’s introspective insights, there is the Proms premiere of a gorgeously flamboyant orchestral extravaganza from one of those German composers whose flourishing careers were knocked off course by the advent of the Third Reich. Tchaikovsky’s equivocal triumph brings down the curtain.

The final week of the 2011 Proms season began with a flamboyant and exhilarating concert given by the superb Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, who celebrate their 110th anniversary this year. They were joined by pianist Hélène Grimaud, playing Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, the piece with which she made her Proms debut in 2001.
