Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Violin Sonata is deeply expressive and full of inner feeling, and he himself was pleased with it: “The first movement is so exquisitely beautiful that nothing seems good enough to follow.” It is hard to disagree – for although he was a pianist, and one of Sweden’s finest of his time, he had a remarkable sensitivity for the expressive qualities of the violin.
Tor Aulin, born just five years before Stenhammar, was a distinguished violinist. His light and graceful Four Watercolours are among his best-known works, where elegant piano writing forms a backdrop to inviting melodies, at times with clear folk-like inflections. Together, Aulin and Stenhammar were also key figures in the founding of the Stockholm Concert Society Orchestra, today the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The Aulin Hall at Konserthuset is named after Tor Aulin.
We hear Amus Kerstin Andersson and Stefan Lindgren, both well-known profiles within the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and frequent participants in Konserthuset’s chamber music series.
