In STHLM Blue Tide, we welcome what defies fixed categories – music and musicians that do not lend themselves easily to classification. Violinist Karin Hellqvist works at the forefront of contemporary music. As a soloist and chamber musician, she is known for her close collaborations with composers and for continually expanding the sonic possibilities of the violin. Here, we encounter her in music for solo violin where new forms of expression and extended techniques take centre stage.

The programme includes a new work by Marie Samuelsson, as well as new music by Marta Forsberg, in which the violin is set against recorded sounds from a cassette player. The cassette player also plays a role in Eiksmarka Omland – a collaboration between Karin Hellqvist and the Norwegian composer Christian Wallumrød, who often incorporates recorded soundscapes into his music, here from Eiksmarka outside Oslo.

In Luftgeister, Carola Bauckholt explores the violin’s fleeting, airy sonorities, while Liza Lim, in One and the Other – Speculative Polskas for Karin, written for Hellqvist, draws on the rhythms of the polska and transforms them into a virtuosic solo work, in which the violin is also fitted with an additional low string.
