In this final concert of Flanders Symphony Orchestra’s season at DE SINGEL, the siren call of the summer holidays can be heard: sunny sounds carry you away, and we dream of journeys that broaden our horizons.
The Italian composer Sollima embodies the multicultural character of his native Palermo. With his minimalist orientalism and echoes of various ethnic traditions from the Mediterranean, Spasimo is an eclectic journey. In dialogue with soloist Ivan Karizna, warm cello tones unfold, transporting you to citrus groves, jasmine, and the salty air of the harbour. Palermo comes alive!
Mendelssohn’s Italian takes us on a journey through the Italian countryside. The composer was barely 20 years old when he started composing the symphony during a European tour. Cheerfully, he takes you by the hand through the streets of Venice, Rome, Florence, and Naples. Is your suitcase packed?
