While separated by nearly a century and a half, the serenades of Mozart and Schoenberg share an exuberant spirit. Mozart infused each movement of his "Gran Partita" Serenade with glorious melodies that express a range of emotion, especially in the poignant Adagio and rowdy opera buffa–styled finale. Schoenberg’s daring Serenade, colorfully scored for bass voice and instrumental septet, also looks back to the dance forms of Mozart’s day, casting them in pungent melodies and quirky rhythms.
