Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances brings colorful, compelling playing as Karina Canellakis makes her Pittsburgh Symphony debut in a program of strikingly varied musical styles.

In this Russian-based programme, Christian Tetzlaff gave a commanding performance of Shostakovich's troubled final concerto, while Karina Canellakis and the LPO eschewed the dark corners and crevices of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony.

Katarina Karnéus displayed sovereign English diction, elegant musicianship and a sense of dramatic scale in Sea Pictures.

A frightyfully enjoyable world premiere of Victoria Borisova-Ollas first opera, turned into a giant Halloween party, where the Kungliga Operan is invaded by an audience of vampires, emaciated Victorian ladies and sinister characters.

RSNO cellist Peter Hunt's pre-concert talk began with a reading from Salman Rushhdie's novel, The Ground Beneath Her Feet. This reworking of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, was the inspiration for Open Ground by Russian-born (now Sweden-based) composer Victoria Borisova-Ollas. The novel's principal character, Vina Aspara, is caught up in an earthquake in Mexico.
