The captain of a ghostly ship, condemned to sail the sea forever, comes ashore in search of his only chance of redemption: true love.

Inspired by the legend of the Flying Dutchman and the composer’s experiences of a particularly rough sea crossing, Der fliegende Holländer was Wagner’s first step from opera to music drama – with music that seethes and rages like a terrific storm.

Longborough’s Music Director Anthony Negus is described as “the UK’s most eminent Wagnerian” (ArtsJournal), and in 2017 was presented with The Wagner Society’s ‘Sir Reginald Goodall Memorial Award’. Conducting Longborough's first Holländer, he joins director Thomas Guthrie and designer Ruth Paton, who, together with Anthony, saw great acclaim for The Magic Flute at last year’s Festival.

Sung in German with English surtitles.

Part of Longborough's 2018 season, which also includes Verdi's La traviata, Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos, and Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea.
