Weber’s Der Freischütz is the rock on which the mansion of German opera is built, serving as inspiration to generations of composers who wanted to tell national folk tales and myths in their work. The Wolf’s Glen scene in particular brought Gothic horror to the stage, and created a sensation in nineteenth-century Europe. It is now only rarely performed in the UK, making this evening an exciting opportunity for opera lovers to hear Weber’s gorgeous and evocative music.
We are delighted to welcome Peter Selwyn, one of the UK’s most experienced opera conductors, for his company debut. The performance will feature English-language narration by the legendary opera translator Amanda Holden, and we are thrilled to be joined by BBC Radio 3’s Petroc Trelawny to read it.
Concert performance sung in German with English surtitles, and an English language narration by Amanda Holden read by Petroc Trelawny.
Pre-concert talk by Dr Barbara Eichner (time tbc).
