About Latvian National Opera and Ballet

The Latvian National Opera and Ballet is an internationally competitive arts centre in Riga which aims to promote and develop the art of opera and ballet both, on local and international level.

The company has operated since October 15, 1918; its continued presence throughout history has always been ensured by its wonderful artists and the performances they’ve put together. The LNOB continues to maintain its rich traditions, by fulfilling its mission to educate on culture and the arts within Latvia, and by representing our country around the world.

An average five new productions are staged each season by the opera and ballet combined; the LNOB performs more than 200 shows per season; the season runs from August to the middle of June. The LNOB has always staged most influential opera and ballet masterpieces, as well as modern examples of the genre. Great importance is always placed on the creation and staging of new Latvian operas and ballets, thus contributing to the development of the genre in Latvia.

World renown opera stars such as singers Elīna Garanča, Kristīne Opolais, Marina Rebeka, Aleksandrs Antoņenko and Egils Siliņš, and conductor Andris Nelsons started their professional careers at the Latvian National Opera. World-famous ballet stars Mikhail Baryshnikov and Māris Liepa also started their careers on the Latvian National Opera stage.
