Schools have broken up for the summer and the dilemma about how to keep the children occupied during the holidays raises its head again. We’ve explored what classical music events are available – either free or at low cost – to entertain children and perhaps encourage them to explore something new.

Grant Park in Chicago’s ‘front yard’ offer free seating to all its concerts, as does Switzerland’s Festival des Arcs.

Our German editor has spoken to four festivals in Germany and Austria about how they make classical music more approachable, often by tempting children to take part.

Opera for children enjoys great popularity. In London, Opera Holland Park’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland makes a return appearance this season. Read Amanda Dean’s review, aided by 7-year old twins Eric and Ray, plus their experience at Clouds, a family-friendly dance performance.

You can search for kids’ events near you by using our concert finder.
