Premiered in 1828 in Paris, Giaochino Rossini’s Le Comte Ory is one of the most erotic operas in all of music. The eponymous Count Ory is a cunning swindler, dedicated to seducing women. When the men of the village are all called away to war, Ory seizes the opportunity to make his own advances on the women of the village. But they’ve all taken a vow of chastity – even the Countesse Adèle, whom the Count is just dying to bed. Even disguising himself as a nun doesn’t seem to help! No matter what he does, he can’t seem to fool them, and is forced to depart in defeat.

Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier updated the action from the Middle Ages to the bourgeois, anti-fun ambience of a French village in the 1960s. This acclaimed production offers a reunion with American soprano Brenda Rae, who thrilled audiences Zurich as Konstanze in Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail. She makes her debut here as Comtesse Adèle. Uruguayan tenor Edgardo Rocha is the count, and Rebeca Olvera returns in the trousers role of Isolier the page. Victorien Vanoosten conducts the Philharmonia Zürich.
