The passionate love story of the upper-class courtesan Violetta, marked by a tragic fate, and the young nobleman Alfredo, inspired by Alexandre Dumas the Younger’s novel La Dame aux Camélias, was immortalized in the operatic canon in 1853 by composer Giuseppe Verdi and librettist Francesco Maria Piave. Defying societal prejudices and their own misunderstandings, Violetta and Alfredo go through hell and back, but alas, their happiness together is short-lived.

Samuel Harjanne, for whom directing La Traviata in Tampere in 2024 marked his debut as opera director, has brought the events of this story set in 19th century Paris into the 1920’s to celebrate the luxurious and elegant art déco style popular in Western Europe at the time. La Traviata is a mix of Moulin Rouge!, Pretty Woman, and The Great Gatsby, and Harjanne has created a fresh new interpretation of Giuseppe Verdi’s breathtaking operatic gem.
