On the 10th of June the popular opera of George and Ira Gershwin's Porgy and Bess which was heard in the first season of the new Madrid coliseum will return to the Royal Theatre, after 17 years. This mestizo and racial opera, which includes rhythms of jazz and blues in its score, African-American folk tunes and gospel, arrives at the Teatro Real together with Cape Town Opera Company. The production, under Tim Murray’s musical direction and a stage design by Christine Crouse, is preceded by a great success in its tour around the UK.
Porgy and Bess tells the story of Porgy, a cripple and African marginal, struggling to rescue his beloved Bess from the hands of criminals who take advantage of her weakness and beauty. The production will be in the Teatro Real, premiered in Cape Town in 2009, the staging moves the original action from port streets in Charleston during the 30s to the criminal underworld of Soweto, in Johannesburg suburbs in the seventies, when the apartheid policy began to crumble.

Porgy and Bess, of which nine functions will be offered on the 10th , 12th  and 16th of June and 1st , 4th , 5th , 7th and 8th  of July, 2015, will replace the performances scheduled for Ciudad de las mentiras (City of lies) by Elena Mendoza, whose premiere was postponed to the 2016-2017 season.
