In the first concert of their exciting series Stravinsky: Myth and Ritual celebrating the varied musical inspirations of this most iconic figure of 20th-century composers, the focus was on Rituals.

Doug Fitch masterminds a splendidly inventive multimedia rendering of Petrushka, ably supported by Alan Gilbert and the NY Phil.

Unusual scenes at the New York Philharmonic this past weekend: a ballerina flouncing across the stage; conductor Alan Gilbert lugging a life-size puppet down the aisle amid rows of laughing, bewildered audience members; black-and-white video projections of the orchestra musicians sipping tea.

I am always hesitant to review a dance piece negatively; I understand that it is a great act of bravery to put one’s choreography out into the atmosphere, subject to criticism and the paltry opinions of people who are bound to incorrectly interpret it.

Ahead of the performances of Life Story as part of Sadler's Wells' upcoming See the Music, Hear the Dance Karole Armitage talked to us of his musical choices, and his choreographic process.
