Herheim’s Fledermaus is a risky experiment that, miraculously, works – at least in a city that knows it so intimately.

Martin G Berger exhaustively reworks the story and the libretto of Salieri's Cublai, gran kan de' Tartari and throws the kitchen sink at this new production, but not everything lands well. 

Kasper Holten's psychological take on the louche lothario remains controversial, but in its third revival, Erwin Schrott's powerful assumption of the title role is a delight.

Peter Konwitschny's production strips away much of the religious symbolism, presenting the difference between Jews and Christians as little more than the dyed colour of their hands. 

It is unlikely that anyone went home from this soul-inspiring performance without that famous "Ode" ringing in his or her head.

Two contraltos in one room is a high concentration of contraltos; except that one of them appeared in the role of conductor.
