New Dots is a new initiative devoted to supporting emerging composers and performers in contemporary music, and this was its second-ever concert, at The Forge in Camden.

Last night was a busy night for classical music in London, with the Simón Bolívar Orchestra of Venezuela, the LSO and Bernard Haitink all performing in various places around the city. But the smart kids were avoiding all that at The Forge in Camden, chilling to the sweet, complicated sounds of Christopher Redgate and his microtonal oboe.

If you're a flute trio, you need to be innovative. And Tempest Flute Trio certainly are: they presented an impressive array of works at the Forge in Camden last night, ranging from innovative arrangements to commissions, and performing with a sense of ensemble which would have been remarkable for any grouping of instruments.

Imagine, for a moment, that you're an 18th century German or French baron deciding what you're going to do with your evening. You might do worse, perhaps, than to invite a couple of dozen friends to your well-appointed sitting room, and bring in one of the great musicians of the day to talk to you about his favourite music and play it to you.
