Work: Children's Corner, suite

Sandwiched between Debussy’s charming Children’s Corner and Mahler’s invitation to heaven, Abrahamsen unveiled his piano concerto for left hand. It was certainly a night for stark contrasts in tone and theme.

Stephen Hough’s solo piano recital had an immediate appeal even before the first note sounded. The programme’s design followed perfect symmetry of Claude Debussy and Frédéric Chopin’s Four Ballades.
